Mexican ranch dressing has been on heavy rotation in my kitchen for years, and once you make it, you'll understand why. It's creamy ranch meets bold salsa in the best possible way - a mexi-ranch sauce that works on tacos, salads, burgers, and honestly, whatever's on the table. No weird ingredients, no fancy equipment, and no reason to buy the bottled stuff ever again.

This sauce came to life on a Blackstone night when I was making my quesadilla burgers and needed something for dipping. I had sour cream, salsa, and a couple of seasoning mixes in the pantry. A quick blend later and my teens were asking what restaurant it came from. That does not happen very often. Enjoy it.

The best part is that you control what goes into it. Use your favorite salsa - mild, medium, or hot - and adjust the taco seasoning to match your family's spice comfort level. If you're on a low FODMAP diet, a certified low FODMAP salsa and taco seasoning keep this totally gut-friendly. It's also easy to make dairy free. I'll cover all of that below.

Why You'll Love It

  • Four ingredients and five minutes - that's the whole commitment
  • Customize the heat level to match your crowd
  • Works as a dressing, dipping sauce, or burger topper
  • Gluten free, low FODMAP, and easily made dairy free
  • Tastes like the restaurant version without the mystery ingredients

What You'll Need

ingredients to make mexican ranch dressing.
  • Sour Cream - Full-fat gives you the creamiest result. Lactose-free sour cream works great too, and so does a dairy free option if that's what your gut needs.
  • Salsa - Use your favorite. Mild, medium, or hot - this is where you control the flavor and heat. My homemade low FODMAP salsa is the one I reach for first.
  • Taco Seasoning - Homemade or store-bought. If you're cooking low FODMAP, use a certified version or make your own.
  • Ranch Seasoning - A little goes a long way here. It adds that creamy, herby flavor that makes this dressing taste like so much more than four ingredients.

Step-By-Step Instructions

draining salsa in a fine mesh strainer.

Step 1: Using a fine mesh strainer, drain any excess liquid from the salsa. This step keeps your dressing thick and creamy instead of watery. Worth it.

wide mouth mason jar with sour cream, salsa, taco and ranch seasoning.

Step 2: Add the sour cream, salsa, taco seasoning, and ranch seasoning to a mason jar or an airtight container.

Step 3: Use an immersion blender to blend everything until smooth.

Prefer a chunkier, more rustic sauce? Just stir it together with a spoon. Both versions are great - just depends on what you're using it for.

Tips and Tricks

  • Drain the salsa first. If you skip this step, the extra liquid makes the dressing thin. A quick drain through a fine mesh strainer makes all the difference.
  • Use full-fat sour cream when you can. It gives the sauce a richer, creamier texture that coats everything better.
  • Make it the night before. This dressing tastes even better after sitting overnight in the fridge. The flavors have time to come together in the best way.
  • If your salsa is chunky, the immersion blender will smooth it out. If you want chunks in the final sauce, skip the blender and just stir.

For more homemade sauces that come together fast, my dairy free ranch dressing is another one that earns a permanent fridge spot.

Ingredient Swaps

  • Sour Cream - Use lactose-free sour cream, a dairy free alternative, or plain Greek yogurt for a higher-protein version.
  • Salsa - Swap in salsa verde for a completely different flavor direction. My homemade salsa verde would be so good here.
  • Taco Seasoning - Use a store-bought packet or make your own. My homemade taco seasoning takes five minutes and tastes better than anything from a packet.
  • Ranch Seasoning - Use a store-bought packet or swap in homemade dairy free ranch seasoning.
spoonful of Mexican ranch dressing above a small mason jar.

Variations

Spicy Mexi-Ranch Sauce - Use a hot salsa and add a pinch of cayenne pepper. My teens vote for this version every time.

Dairy Free Mexican Ranch Dressing - Swap the sour cream for a dairy free alternative. The texture will be slightly different but still creamy and great.

Creamy Salsa Verde Dressing - Use salsa verde in place of red salsa for a bright, tangy twist on the classic.

I haven't tested these variations in my kitchen. If you replace or add any ingredients, please let us know how it turned out in the comments below!

How To Use Mexican Ranch Salad Dressing

This sauce is dangerously versatile. A few favorites:

  • Drizzle it over my quesadilla burgers - this is where it all started
  • Use it as a dipping sauce for chicken flautas or baked chicken tacos
  • Pour it over a taco salad instead of western dressing
  • Spread it on a wrap or a gluten free sandwich instead of mayo
  • Use it as a dipping sauce for low FODMAP chicken drumsticks on a game night - nobody will say no to that

Storing

Store: Keep in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. Give it a quick stir before using.

Freeze: This one does not freeze well. The sour cream will separate and the texture won't come back. Just make a fresh batch - it takes five minutes anyway.

Low FODMAP Notes

Low FODMAP ingredient information is based on the Monash University Food App and FODMAP Friendly App testing results as of the day posted. As always, modify based on your gut and what works for you on a low FODMAP diet.

  • Sour Cream - Sour cream is low in lactose and considered low FODMAP at 2 tablespoons or 40 grams per meal. For a fully lactose-free option, use a lactose-free sour cream.
  • Salsa - Use a certified low FODMAP salsa or make your own using the homemade low FODMAP salsa recipe. Watch for garlic and onion in store-bought versions.
  • Taco Seasoning - Use a certified low FODMAP taco seasoning or make your own. Most store-bought packets contain garlic and onion powder, which are high FODMAP.
  • Ranch Seasoning - Use a low FODMAP ranch seasoning or make your own blend.

For additional information on a low FODMAP diet, please visit Monash University or FODMAP Friendly. Both have websites and apps for additional guidance and testing results.

FAQs

Is this the same as the Applebee's mexi-ranch sauce?

It's very similar. Applebee's uses their signature ranch-based sauce with taco-inspired seasoning. This homemade version nails that same creamy, smoky flavor.

What is Mexican ranch dressing made of?

Just four ingredients - sour cream, salsa, taco seasoning, and ranch seasoning. Blend it smooth or stir it for a rustic, chunkier version.

Can I use store-bought salsa?

Yes! Use any salsa you love. Just drain off any extra liquid first so the dressing doesn't get watery.

Can I make this dairy free?

Yes. Swap the sour cream for a dairy free alternative. The texture will be slightly lighter but still works great as a dressing or dipping sauce.

How long does it last in the fridge?

Up to 4-5 days in an airtight container. It actually tastes better on day two.

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream?

Yes. Plain Greek yogurt works as a 1:1 swap. It adds extra protein and a slightly tangier flavor.
