Why I Love This Recipe
I love the cooling factor, and the balance of just a dollop adds to my favorite chicken enchiladas. It is refreshing and made ultra creamy with the addition of an avocado! It is the perfect in-between of lime crema and guac!
Featured Ingredients
- Avocado - Use a ripe Hass avocado! Monash University recently retested avocados and increased the safe serving size to three tablespoons. As always test your own personal tolerance and modify as needed.
- Sour Cream - Use a lactose free sour cream if lactose is a trigger for you.
- Fresh Limes - Zest the lime and then juice it for a two-for-one ingredient option.
- Kosher Salt - Compliments the sour cream with the perfect salty flavor.
- Fresh Cilantro - Totally optional but adds a wonderful flavor. I use it as a garnish.
See the recipe card for the exact measurements and complete instructions. Selected ingredients are based on current serving sizes measured by the Monash FODMAP App at the time of publishing. As always, follow your gut and modify as needed.
Step-By-Step Instructions
Using a sharp knife, cut the avocado in half and remove the pit. Using a spoon, scoop out the avocado. Place the avocado in a food processor bowl.
Add the sour cream, lime zest, lime juice and salt. Pulse until combined, and it becomes a smooth sauce.
Ingredient Swaps
- Sour Cream - Swap out the sour cream and use a protein-packed plain Greek yogurt.
- Lime Juice - No fresh limes? Swap in lemon juice instead. It will have a more tangy flavor.
Lime Crema Variations
No Avocado Lime Crema: Is the avocado not ripe? Skip it and use this recipe for lime crema. It is another delicious option!
Avocado Lime Crema Dressing: Thin out the crema by adding a tablespoon of heavy cream, extra lime juice, or a little water. This will make the crema thinner and more pourable, making it a great salad dressing. Try it on taco salad!
Storage
Store: Keep the lime crema in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Give it a good stir before using.
Freezing: I would not recommend freezing the lime crema. The freezing and defrosting process isn’t great for sour cream and avocado, so I suggest making a fresh batch.
Meal Planning
I love toppings. It makes a meal feel more customized and fun! It is also great for picky eaters to choose what they do or, more importantly, don’t want on their plate. I love to use this tangy avocado cream sauce on beef tacos, baked chicken tacos, chicken fajitas, or taco soup. Add this crema to a long list of topping options, including corn salsa, pico de gallo, salsa, green taco sauce, or guacamole. Have I told you how much I love toppings?!
