When tater tot hotdish meets the flavors of a drive-thru classic, you get Big Mac tater tot casserole. It is cheesy, saucy, and piled high with crispy tots. Think layers of seasoned beef, melty cheddar, tangy pickles, and a drizzle of Thousand Island dressing, all baked together in true Minnesota comfort food style. It is the best of both worlds: hearty hotdish vibes with that Big Mac twist your family will love.

Tips and Tricks

Crispy Tots Quicker! For a quicker process and still having crispy tots, bake the tater tots on a sheet pan for 10-15 minutes before layering them on top.

Meal Prep Frozen Beef!  My go-to trick for getting dinner on the table every night. I cook ground beef in bulk, freeze it in 1-pound portions, and pull it out whenever I need a quick meal base.

Serve on a Bun! My teens love to pile a scoop of Big Mac casserole onto a hamburger bun and eat it like a sloppy joe, but with Big Mac flavors!

Extra Cheesy? Grate some fresh cheddar cheese over the tater tots after baking. They will melt into the crispy tots and another layer of cheesy goodness.

Ingredient Swaps

  • Ground Beef - Swap for ground turkey or ground chicken for a lighter option.
  • Cheddar Cheese - Use Monterey Jack, Colby, or lactose free cheese if dairy is a concern.
  • Smash Burger Sauce - For a different flavor profile, use homemade smash burger sauce. It has hints of horseradish, ketchup, and mustard.

Special Diet Variations

Gluten Free:  Choose a gluten free brand of tater tots (Ore-Ida are usually safe) and double check that your Thousand Island dressing and pickles are gluten free.

Low FODMAP: Use Essence of Onion Salt from Smoke and Sanity, lactose free cheddar, and homemade Low FODMAP Thousand Island Dressing. Stick with dill pickle slices without onion or garlic listed in the ingredients.

Dairy Free: Swap in your favorite dairy free cheese that melts well (like Violife or Daiya) and use a dairy free mayo in the sauce.

Lower Carb: Skip the tots and top with lightly roasted cauliflower florets or shredded lettuce for a Big Mac salad vibe.

Lighter Version:  Go for ground turkey, reduced fat cheese, and light mayo in the sauce.

Toppings

The cheesy Big Mac cheeseburger casserole is delicious on its own, but the toppings take it from good to "whoa, is this really a hotdish?"

  • Shredded Lettuce - the classic Big Mac crunch.
  • Diced Tomatoes - fresh, juicy, and adds color.
  • Extra Pickles - because you can never have too many.
  • Drizzle of Thousand Island - ties the whole Big Mac vibe together.
  • Sesame Seeds - sprinkle over the top for that true burger bun look.
  • Sliced Jalapeños - if you like a little heat with your tots.
  • Green Onion Tops - an easy, low FODMAP garnish with a pop of flavor.
finished big mac casserole topped with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and thousand island dressing.

Storing and Reheating

Storing - Let the casserole cool completely, then cover tightly with foil or transfer to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Reheating - For best results, reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees F until warmed through (about 20 minutes). This keeps the tater tots crispy.

Microwave Option - Heat individual servings in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. The tots won't be as crisp, but it works in a pinch.

Freezing - Assemble the casserole, but don't bake. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and foil, then freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before baking as directed, adding about 10 minutes to the cook time.

Low FODMAP Notes

Low FODMAP ingredient information is based on the Monash University Food App and FODMAP Friendly App testing results as of the day posted. As always, modify based on your gut and what works for you on a low FODMAP diet.

  • Ground Beef - Plain ground beef is naturally low FODMAP.
  • Onion Powder - Use Essence of Onion Salt from Smoke and Sanity for a low FODMAP onion flavor.
  • Thousand Island Dressing - Most store-bought dressings contain onion or garlic. Use homemade Low FODMAP Thousand Island Dressing for a safe option.
  • Cheese - Use lactose free cheddar or a variety like sharp cheddar in small portions.
  • Pickles and Relish - Stick with dill pickles and dill relish in moderate amounts. Look for options without garlic or onion listed in the ingredients.
  • Tater Tots - Many are gluten free and low FODMAP, but always double check labels for hidden onion or garlic seasoning.

For additional information on a low FODMAP diet, please visit Monash University or FODMAP Friendly. Both have websites and apps for additional guidance and testing results.

FAQs

Can I make Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole ahead of time?

Yes. Assemble the casserole, cover tightly, and refrigerate up to 24 hours. Bake as directed, adding a few extra minutes if it starts out cold.

How can I make a casserole heartier?

Use two pounds of ground beef to boost the protein and stretch the servings. You can also mix in extra vegetables like diced bell peppers, zucchini, or mushrooms for more flavor and texture.

How do I keep the tater tots crispy in cheeseburger tater tot casserole?

Bake the tots on a sheet pan for 10 minutes before adding them, and reheat leftovers in the oven instead of the microwave.

Can I freeze Big Mac casserole?

Yes. Freeze unbaked, tightly wrapped, for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight, then bake until the tots are golden.

What cheese works best in Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole?

American cheese is classic but can be greasy. Cheddar cheese works but so does Monterey Jack, Colby, or lactose free cheddar all melt beautifully.

Is there a gluten free version of this casserole?

Yes. Choose a gluten free brand of tater tots and check labels on Thousand Island dressing and pickles.

How do I make this a Low FODMAP Big Mac casserole?

Swap onion powder for Essence of Onion Salt, use lactose free cheddar, and go with my homemade Low FODMAP Thousand Island dressing.

Can I double the recipe for a crowd?

Shredded lettuce, diced tomato, extra pickles, sesame seeds, and a drizzle of Thousand Island are the classics.

What to do with the few tater tots remaining in the bag?

Put them on a baking sheet and bake them alongside the Big Mac casserole! Enjoy as a kitchen snack.

What To Serve With Big Mac Tater Tot Casserole

This casserole is plenty filling on its own, but a crisp green salad or simple coleslaw balances out all the cheesy comfort. Add oven roasted veggies for an easy side. For a fun twist, set up a topping bar with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, extra pickles, and sesame seeds so everyone can dress their plate just like a burger. And if you're serving it for game day, pair it with chips and Low FODMAP Queso for the ultimate spread.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a large skillet, cook and crumble the ground beef until no pink remains. Drain if needed, then stir in the Thousand Island dressing, mayonnaise, smoked paprika, onion powder, ground mustard, black pepper, and dill relish until combined.
  • Spread the beef mixture evenly into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with sliced cheddar cheese and layer the pickle slices on top.

  • To serve, top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, extra pickles, a drizzle of Thousand Island, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. For a fun twist, scoop onto toasted sesame hamburger buns.

Notes

Note 1: For a low FODMAP Thousand Island dressing, make your own at home for a safe option without hidden onion or garlic.
Note 2: For a low FODMAP onion option, use Essence of Onion Salt from Smoke and Sanity.
Note 3: Grab a bag pre-sliced cheddar cheese used for sandwiches. Shredded cheddar also works perfectly. I also tested American cheese. It was tasty but turned out a little too greasy for my crew.
