Step-By-Step Instructions
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef until it is no longer pink. In another skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Once melted, sprinkle the flour over the skillet. Whisk until the flour is incorporated.
Next, add half of the beef broth to the butter-flour mixture. Whisk until lumpy, and the broth is absorbed. Then, add the second half. Keep whisking until the sauce is thickened. Add the Worcestershire sauce, and pepper.
Add the cooked ground beef to the sauce. Stir.
Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with a nonstick cooking spray. Pour the meat sauce into the bottom. Spread it out evenly.
Next, sprinkle the mixed vegetables over the beef in an even layer.
Line up the tater tots so they cover the veggies. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for an hour or until the tater tots are golden brown. Garnish with chopped green onions.
Tips and Tricks
Assemble the casserole the night before and store it in the refrigerator. The tater tots will defrost, so they will need less cooking time.
TOP TIP: Save a step and use a pound of meal prepped ground beef from the freezer!

Ingredient Swaps
- Soy Sauce - Instead of worcestershire sauce, use a gluten free soy sauce. I love the La Choy brand.
- Mixed Veggies - Use peas and carrots or only corn for different veg options.
- Ground Turkey - Swap out the ground beef for a pound of ground turkey!
Variations
Green Bean Tater Tot Casserole: This is another classic variation of this hotdish. You can use chopped green beans instead of mixed veggies.
Vegetarian Tater Tot Casserole: Swap out the ground beef for chopped, canned mushrooms.
Cheesy Tater Tot Casserole: Add 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese before the frozen vegetables. If you really want cheesy - add a layer of shredded cheese on top of the tater tots too.
Breakfast Tater Tot Casserole: Love tater tots as much as I do, make this overnight tater tot breakfast casserole. It has breakfast sausage, tater tots - of course, diced peppers, eggs, and cheese.
Storing and Reheating
Storing: Keep any leftovers covered and eat within four days for best results. Be aware the tater tots will lose their crunchy texture.
Reheating: Place a serving size on a microwave-safe plate and heat for 1-2 minutes or until warm.
Freezing: This casserole is a great recipe to freeze - either before cooking or after. I recommend defrosting the casserole before baking.
FAQs
Mashed potatoes would be an awesome option. It would be like this recipe for Sherpherd’s Pie with ground beef, not ground lamb. In a pinch, I have also used frozen french fries.
Meal Planning
While tater tot casserole is a whole meal on its own, add a green salad with Italian dressing or ranch dressing. For even more veggies, add a side of oven roasted vegetables. Another great filling option would be gluten free corn bread or gluten free biscuits! Add a spoonful of frozen strawberry jam, too.
