It’s a perfect supper option in the warm summer nights or when your kids get braces on their teeth. Creamy smoothie bowls saved supper AND breakfast in those painful braces days! Eating a smoothie from a bowl felt like enjoying a bowl of soup, except it was colder and topped with fresh fruit and homemade granola!
In addition to being an excellent option for hurting teeth, it is also a healthy option and gluten free! Filled with protein from Greek yogurt and vitamins from the strawberries and the banana. And if you choose your toppings wisely, you can increase your fiber intake with nuts and seeds and a delicious granola!

Simple Ingredients
- Frozen Strawberries - Must be frozen to get a thick, smooth consistency.
- Frozen Banana - Using frozen fruit, like bananas, creates thick smoothie bowls.
- Plain Greek Yogurt - I love this for a low-sugar, high-protein option. If you love something different, go ahead and use it.
- Strawberry Jam - Optional. I use my frozen homemade strawberry jam made during the peak strawberry season. It is completely optional but adds sweetness and a beautiful color.
- Topping Options - Add as many as you dare!

Step-By-Step Instructions
A day before, peel and chunk off small pieces of a banana in a single layer on a baking sheet covered in parchment paper or wax paper. I usually do more than one banana a time as a time-saving shortcut. Once fully frozen, I place the frozen bananas in a freezer friendly ziploc bag and save them for the next smoothie bowl.
Next to the freezing bananas, place the bowl you are going to pour the smoothie into. This allows the bowl to be cold and will help slow the melting that happens.
Pro Tip: Prep your topping options before you blend the smoothie. Waste no time enjoying your smoothie bowl before it melts.
Grab a blender. We use a Ninja blender as a high-quality, high-powered blender at a low-cost option from Amazon. My daughter uses it to make smoothies! Add the frozen strawberries, frozen banana, Greek yogurt, and strawberry jam, if using, in the blender cup.
Blend and pulse until smooth. You will need to scrape the sides of the blender and keep mixing until smooth unless you enjoy a more rustic smoothie and don’t mind smaller pieces of fruit. If needed, add a little liquid to help blend the smoothie. Use your favorite milk of choice.
Remove the empty bowl from the freezer and pour the strawberry smoothie into the bowl. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy immediately. Unlike a traditional smoothie, smoothie bowls have a thick consistency that can easily be eaten with a spoon.
Variations Based on Diet Needs
Dairy Free Option - Replace the Greek yogurt with a coconut-based yogurt, and if additional liquid is needed, use oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.
Low FODMAP Option - Use a banana with minimal brown spots and still has green on the stem.
Protein Boost - Add extra protein from vanilla protein powder.
Smoothie Bowl Substitutions
Strawberry Greek Yogurt - Increase the strawberry flavor and use a strawberry flavored yogurt. It will increase the sugar levels but still keep the protein levels.
Not a fan of Banana - Swap it out for half of an avocado. Use frozen pieces to keep the consistency, and add healthy fats to the smoothie.
Best Smoothie Bowl Toppings
Just like ice cream sundaes, the best part about smoothie bowls is the toppings and the ability to choose exactly what you want! From Homemade Granola or Sweet and Spicy Pecans to nuts and seeds to fresh fruit like fresh strawberries, blueberries, and banana slices. First, add chia seeds or rolled oats, and the granola last. It will give the chia seeds or oats some time to soften, and adding the granola last will keep the granola crunchy longer.
Storage for Leftovers
If you have any leftovers, scrape off the toppings that will get soggy, like granola. Cover and freeze whatever is left and eat it within 3-4 days.
Meal Prep Tips
If you need to feed an entire family smoothie bowls at one time, make them earlier in the day, fill the bowls, and freeze! Allow the bowls to defrost a bit, and let everyone add their toppings. Nobody will be waiting for the blender! Your children will think they are having ice cream for dinner!
This is also a perfect meal for one. The ingredients in this smoothie bowl recipe are the perfect amount for one to have in the freezer, waiting for those nights when everyone is gone.
Meal Planning
Need more than a smoothie bowl for dinner or breakfast? Add additional protein with breakfast meat, like sausage or ham steaks. Make a batch of pancakes or French toast. Need more soft food options, scrambled eggs with cottage cheese—tons of protein to feel full without any mouth pain from braces.
FAQs
It is important to use frozen fruit, and a thick yogurt like Greek to keep any additional juice or moisture from a smoothie bowl. Fresh fruit will have more moisture and liquid, such as milk or juices, creating a thin consistency. Also, putting the bowl in the freezer to be cold when pouring the smoothies will lessen the melt factor.
Use the same amounts of fresh fruit the smoothie bowl recipe calls for and blend like normal. Pour the smoothie into a bowl and freeze overnight. It will freeze solid. Defrost a bit before mealtime and add your toppings.
