The smell of this orange zest sugared toast baking in the oven smells exactly like my Grandma's house. Orange toast is a simple recipe with only four ingredients: orange zest, granulated sugar, salted butter, and white bread.

The best part about this recipe is while the toast bakes in the oven, it smells amazing, almost like Christmas and summer at the same time. It is perfect with a hot cup of coffee for breakfast or as a snack in the afternoon.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

handwritten recipe in spiral notebook and a blue and white napkin.
  • So, So Simple
  • Easily Gluten Free and Low FODMAP
  • It reminds me of my Grandma

Featured Ingredients

  • Bread - I used white gluten free bread from Canyon House Country White brand.
  • Orange Zest - Only the bright orange zest will do.
  • Sugar - White, granulated sugar.
  • Butter - Salted, softened, and brings the sugar and orange zest into a spreadable topping.

See the recipe card for the exact measurements and complete instructions. Selected ingredients are based on current serving sizes measured by the Monash University FODMAP App at the time of publishing. As always, follow your gut and modify as needed.

How To Make Orange Toast

  • In a small bowl, add the softened butter, orange zest, and sugar. Stir until combined.
  • Place the six pieces of bread on a baking sheet and spread the orange zest mixture evenly over them.
  • Bake in a preheated 250 degrees F oven for 60 minutes. Watch carefully at the end of the cooking time because it will go from done to burnt very quickly.

Ingredient Swap

  • Bread Options: If you do not need gluten free bread, I recommend using white bread, thinly sliced. English Muffin bread is a great option.

Orange Toast Variations

  • Lemon Toast: Use lemon zest instead of orange zest for a different flavor option!
  • Grapefruit Toast: Use grapefruit zest as another flavor option.

Storage And Freezing

Store: Keep any leftovers in an airtight container on the countertop.

Freeze: Leftover toast can be kept in the freezer with a piece of parchment paper in between to prevent sticking. Defrost on the countertop and enjoy. If a warm slice of toast is wanted, heat in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Meal Planning
